RENO, Nev. (AP) — The Reno Gazette-Journal intends to increase its use of national news and sports content from USA Today beginning on Sunday.

Gazette-Journal publisher John Maher said it's part of an enhanced partnership between the two publications owned by the McLean, Va.-based Gannett Co. and is intended to allow his newsroom to focus more on local coverage.

Maher said the expanded USA Today section was created with support from Gannett's U.S. Community Publishing division and USA Today. While the two have worked in recent years to deliver the Gazette-Journal's "Nation & World" section, the new effort will feature more national news, money, sports and life content, he said.

"Our readers have told us they want additional local coverage, and this partnership will allow us to use our valuable resources to deliver just that," Maher said in a statement.

The USA Today section will serve as the paper's primary source for national and international news, and focus on national advertising, he said. It will run daily except for Saturdays and add an average of 60 pages to the paper per week.

Robert Dickey, the president of U.S. Community Publishing, said the publishing model was tested in four Gannett newspapers and plans are to roll it out to more this year.

"We were thrilled by the positive feedback from our pilot markets and look forward to expanding this offering to the rest of our dedicated subscriber base and continue to deepen our relationships in northern Nevada," he said.
