CHICAGO (AP) — First-term Republican Congressman Bob Dold has conceded his northeastern Illinois congressional seat to Democratic challenger Brad Schneider.

In remarks to supporters Tuesday night, Dold said his campaign "came up short."

The contest in the 10th District had been identified as one to watch by both parties. Democrats identified it as a possible pickup in the fight to control the U.S. House.

The newly-drawn district extends north of Chicago to the Wisconsin line. It's a mix of upscale and working-class communities.

Both candidates had mounted aggressive campaigns, making hundreds of thousands of voter calls. Both also tried to portray themselves as being able to work with both parties.

Schneider founded his own management consultant firm. He has never held public office.
