At the tail end of a largely civil immigration reform debate Tuesday, a Republican congressman ripped into a White House adviser who criticized the GOP on Twitter.

Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., thanked a pair of immigration activists for their testimony at a House Judiciary subcommittee meeting delving into the possible legalization of children who were brought by their patents to the U.S. illegally. He then said their thoughtful testimony stood in contrast to the remarks on Twitter by President Obama assistant Dan Pfeiffer, who Gowdy called a “demagogic, self-serving political hack."

Gowdy, the chairman of the subcommitee, added that Pfeiffer "can't even be elected to a parent advisory committee, much less Congress."

Pfeiffer was critical of House Republican efforts to pass a revamped DREAM Act, called the KIDS Act, that would legalize the children of illegal immigrants, saying on Twitter that the GOP plan was to “allow some kids to stay but deport their parents.”

Much of the debate at Tuesday’s hearing surrounded whether citizenship or legal status should be granted to the parents of children who would be covered under the DREAM Act.
