President Obama will soon tap Thomas Perez, the assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights and a former Montgomery County councilman, as his next labor secretary, according to Bloomberg News.

The White House declined to comment on the selection process, but Bloomberg cites two people familiar with the process.

If Perez is selected, it would ensure  a Hispanic retains the top labor post after the exit of Hilda Solis.

Perez formerly served as secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation but for Washington-area residents, he’s most known for his stint on the Montgomery County Council. Perez was on the body from 2002 to 2006 and represented the greater Silver Spring area.

He was the first Hispanic ever elected to the council.
