Mexican authorities arrested three men suspected of membership in the Iranian-backed terrorist organization, Hezbollah, including one American citizen, local media reported.
“The American citizen of Arab origin Rafic Mohammad Labboun Allaboun, a suspected member of the terrorist network Hezbollah, was arrested Saturday night in Merida through an operation conducted by the National Migration Institute (INM) and the State Police,” The Yucatan Times (Mexico) wrote today.
The U.S. State Department couldn’t confirm that the arrest had occurred when asked about it during the press briefing today.
“We are now seeking more information from Mexican authorities, so I don’t have anything further for you,” spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. “I think we’re at the stage of checking with the Mexicans.”
Someone in the Mexican government suggested to The Yucatan Times that the U.S. citizen played a role in the September 11 terror attacks that were spearheaded by Osama bin Laden and Al-Qaeda.
“After the arrest, information leaked that somehow Labboun Allaboun is linked to the 911 attack of the Twin Towers in New York, [but] the data has not yet been fully confirmed,” the Times reported.
Tomorrow is the 11th anniversary of the attacks.
