A reporter asked White House Press Secretary Jay Carney on Friday if President Obama planned to force-feed Guantanamo Bay prisoners during the celebration of Ramadan, citing the Muslim holy month as being a “time for reflection” rather than a “time for conflict.”

Carney indicated that the process would continue even though the prisoners were attempting a hunger strike.

According to a report in the Miami Herald, the military counted 104 detainees as hunger strikers  45 of whom were listed for night-time force-feedings during the month of Ramadan.

“Obviously the president does not want these individuals to die,” Carney said adding that Obama was “understanding” of the situation and would continue to make steps to close the Guantanamo Bay prison.
