New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie knew about the closures on the George Washington Bridge that have threatened to derail his political future, two major press outlets reported Friday afternoon.

"The former Port Authority official who personally oversaw the lane closings on the George Washington Bridge in the scandal now swirling around Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said on Friday that 'evidence exists' the governor knew about the lane closings when they were happening," Kate Zernike of the New York Times reported.

The accusation was made in a letter by the lawyer of ex-Port Authority official David Wildstein. The letter was obtained by both the Times and NBC News. The letter was written to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the George Washington Bridge linking the two states.

From NBC's M. Alex Johnson:

"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie knew about the controversial closing of lanes on the George Washington Bridge when it happened last year, a former close aide alleged Friday in a letter obtained by NBC News."
