CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming State Museum has put a rare Lakota horse mask back on display in Cheyenne following recent conservation and stabilization work.

The museum received a grant from the Greenwood Fund at the Denver Foundation to restore the mask, one of 50 such horse masks known to exist. The conservation work included addressing loose beadwork and repairing the lining and other elements.

Curator Mandy Langfald says the mask is notable for its size and fully beaded patriotic design. It's available for public viewing at the museum's Barber Native American Gallery. The mask is believed to be made near the turn of the 20th century and was donated to the museum in the 1950s.
