Rikers officer convicted of drug dealing

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City correction officer has been convicted of smuggling marijuana into Rikers Island.

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara (buh-RAH'-ruh) says 31-year-old Khalif Phillips was convicted on Wednesday following a one-week trial. He's scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 25.

Prosecutors accused Phillips of smuggling marijuana and scalpels into maximum security facilities and selling them to inmates.

Information on his attorney was not immediately available.
