RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A jogger on a morning run around Rio de Janeiro's iconic lagoon was shot Wednesday in an apparent robbery attempt.
The runner was shot twice when he resisted an attempt by two assailants to steal a gold necklace, the police said in a statement. One bullet hit his arm and the other grazed the top of his head.
The shooting incident took place near a country club in the exclusive Leblon neighborhood frequented by thousands of tourists every day during the World Cup, according to O Globo newspaper.
The victim was rushed to the hospital while his assailants fled on motorbikes.
