Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates did Vice President Joe Biden and his presidential ambitions no favors in offering a summary of the politician's foreign policy instincts.

“I think he has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades," Gates wrote of Biden in his new book, Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War, according to the New York Times.

That stings, especially in light of the fact that President Obama picked Biden as his 2008 running mate in order to "add foreign policy expertise to the ticket," as the Times put it. oversight of Iraq policy after Obama took office was also Biden's responsibility.

The vice president admitted during the 2012 campaign that he opposed authorizing the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound.

If pressed, Biden could retort that Gates, as noted in the memoir, also initially opposed the raid — although that wouldn't demonstrate that Biden has "a much higher I.Q." than Gates.
