NEW YORK (AP) — Mitt Romney's spokeswoman says a cancer-stricken woman discussed in a Democratic TV ad would have had health care under the Republican presidential candidate's health plan in Massachusetts.

During a Fox News interview Wednesday, spokeswoman Andrea Saul said Romney's Massachusetts plan would have covered a woman who lost her health insurance after her husband was laid off from a company taken over by the private equity firm Romney once led.

The woman story is featured in an ad by Priorities USA Action, a group aligned with President Barack Obama.

Conservatives criticized Romney's campaign. The Massachusetts plan requires people to buy health insurance, a policy also in Obama's national law. Romney has avoided discussing his health plan on the campaign trail, though he says it was the right plan for Massachusetts.
