Former Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, suggested that the murder of the Chris Kyle was somehow caused by the former Navy SEAL’s career as the most effective sniper in U.S. military history.
“Chris Kyle’s death seems to confirm that ‘he who lives by the sword dies by the sword,’” Paul tweeted. “Treating PTSD at a firing range doesn’t make sense.”
Kyle was shot at a gun range by another former soldier who suffered from some mental illness related to his military experience. “Chris died doing what filled his heart with passion — serving soldiers struggling with the fight to overcome PTSD,” Travis Cox, the president of a non-profit that Kyle founded to help veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, told ABC. “His service, life and premature death will never be in vain.”
The Department of Veterans Affairs notes that Prolonged Exposure Therapy “has been shown to be one of the most effective treatments for PTSD.” The VA explains that in such therapy, “you practice approaching situations which are safe but which you may have been avoiding because they are related to the trauma.” (H/T Greg Pollowitz for the VA link).
