HANOVER, Md. (AP) — Maryland Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger is urging leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives to allow a vote to extend emergency unemployment insurance.

The Maryland Democrat is scheduled to join jobless state residents at an event in Hanover on Monday morning.

Ruppersberger's office says nearly 33,900 Maryland residents lost their unemployment benefits since the program's expiration on Dec. 28. A five-month extension was passed by the U.S. Senate in April, but the House has not yet considered the extension.

The event in Hanover marks the local launch of the national "Faces of the Unemployed" project to highlight the impact unemployment is having on families across the country.
