SAN DIEGO (AP) — An elephant calf at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park must have a tusk removed because it became infected.

City News Service says 2-year-old Emanti broke the tusk about eight weeks ago. He had a procedure similar to a root canal about three weeks ago to remove infected tissue inside the tusk.

But the zoo says more infection was found during a checkup on Thursday and a veterinarian has decided the tusk must go.

Emanti also is taking fruit-flavored antibiotics to fight the infection.
