SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — More than 120 schools in Illinois have been newly certified as meeting federal health benchmarks for nutrition and physical activity.

The Illinois State Board of Education on Monday named the 126 schools that qualified since last summer for the certification. The voluntary program is called the HealthierUS School Challenge. It began in 2004 and has three award levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Schools qualify for each award level depending on student physical activity, menu plans and recipes, nutrition education, school wellness plans and partnerships with community groups to promote health.

State Superintendent of Education Christopher Koch (COOK) says when students are physically active and eating well, they're more likely to succeed in the classroom and develop lifelong healthy habits.
