PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (AP) — A few scuffles are breaking out between World Cup fans in southern Brazil, where some 80,000 Argentines have gathered to cheer on their team.

But the overall situation in Porto Alegre remains calm.

Brazilian security officials were deeply concerned about Argentina's infamous hooligan fans causing trouble in Porto Alegre, which is about 700 kilometers (430 miles) from the Argentine border.

On Saturday, Argentina fans got into a melee with Brazilian fans, tossing beer bottles and insults at each other, but there were no serious injuries.

Brazilian riot police are out in force in Porto Alegre Wednesday — and are quickly responding to the scattered fights that have broken out ahead of Argentina's match with Nigeria.
