Police in Laurel have arrested two juveniles in connection with a Friday night fire at a community playground.

Officers said two juveniles caused light-to-moderate damage to equipment at the Gude Park playground in Laurel, the second fire at a playground in the city in recent days.

City spokesman Pete Piringer said the suspects fled the scene of the most recent fire, but were later apprehended by police. Both suspects have since been released to their parents.

Police responded last week to a fire at the Discovery Community Park, which suffered "significant" damage from the flames. Piringer said the city is currently investigating whether the two playground fires are connected.

Officials hope to have both repaired and fully functional by summer.
