Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to take control of far more than just the Crimean region in Ukraine.

“I don't think Putin's ambition is Crimea here,” Murphy said on ABC's “This Week,” as voters in the region held a referendum on whether to join the Russian Federation.

Murphy added that the “sham referendum isn’t fooling anyone” and said Putin has his sights set on the rest of Ukraine and other areas of Europe that could come under greater Russian control.

The Connecticut senator predicted that if Putin moved Russian forces further eastward into Ukraine, it would have bloody results.

“The Ukrainians are not going to go down without a fight,” Murphy said.

When asked about the possibility of U.S. military aid for Ukraine, however, the senator would not yet endorse such an option.

“I’m not sure we’re to the point of providing arms,” Murphy said.

“I don’t think there’s anything we can do militarily,” the Democrat added.
