Sen. Mike Lee: Obamacare bans 98 percent of individual insurance plans

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, called foul on President Obama’s promise that if you like your health care plan, you can keep it, as he noted a recent study showing that 98 percent of individual plans are illegal under Obamacare.

“As we we were all shocked to learn recently, 98 percent of all individual health insurance policies in the United States right now are in violation of Obamacare’s standards,” Lee said on the Senate floor as he argued in favor of de-funding the health care law.

Health Pocket, an insurance data company, recently provided the basis for that claim. “The data shows that there will be a near complete transformation of the individual and family health insurance market starting in 2014,” according to Health Pocket. “Less than 2% of the existing health plans in the individual market today provide all the Essential Health Benefits required under the Affordable Care Act (ACA)” (original emphasis). The company explained that most of the plans that won’t pass muster under Obamacare fail for lack of dental or vision coverage for kids, as well as a lack of maternity care.

Lee suggested that people covered by those plans may have to pay the individual mandate penalty. “When Obamacare goes into full effect, the  Americans who own those policies will have to either buy more expensive insurance, or pay the unconstitutional fine,” he said.
