FORT WORTH, Texas (Legal Newsline) – U.S. Senators Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and John Cornyn, R-Texas, will speak at rally in defense of the Texas Marriage Amendment on Thursday evening.

Conservative Republicans of Texas, the largest Republican PAC in the Lone Star state, organized the rally, which will be held at the Texas Republican State Convention at the Omni Hotel in Fort Worth, according to a Wednesday press release.

In the Nov. 8, 2005 general election, voters approved a Marriage Amendment to the Texas Constitution that reads: “Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.”

The rally is in response to the decision of San Antonio federal district judge, Orlando Garcia, who on Feb. 24 ruled that the Texas Constitution Marriage Amendment was unconstitutional.

More than 180 state and federal officeholders from Texas, as well as Texas Republican Party officials, have cosponsored the event with the stated purpose of asserting Texas’ state sovereignty over its laws and constitution, the press release states.

“With this event, we are launching a petition that tells the federal government that Texas is drawing a line in the sand, just like 173 men drew a line in the sand at the Alamo to keep Texas free,” said Steven F. Hotze, president and founder of CRT.  “What we are saying is ‘don’t mess with Texas.’”

In addition to Cruz and Cornyn, Dan Patrick, Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, and Ken Paxton, Republican candidate for attorney general, will also be speaking at the event.
