DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — Former Senegal President Abdoulaye Wade has returned to this country after spending two years abroad following a failed bid for a third term.

An Associated Press reporter at Dakar's airport saw Wade's plane arrive from Morocco Friday night.

Senegal was rocked by street protests before the 2012 election as rappers, activists and ordinary voters waged a campaign urging Wade to abide by term limits and step down. He lost to current President Macky Sall in a runoff and moved to France.

The 87-year-old retains a strong support base. On Tuesday Sall's government ordered that a welcome rally for Wade be canceled, citing security concerns.

Wade was originally due to return Wednesday, but his party said his plane was denied permission to land. Officials said they had never received a request.
