The fears, threats and hype over the looming budget sequester hit a new high Tuesday when the Democratic National Committee more than doubled the White House estimate that 750,000 jobs are facing the ax if the spending cuts take place--and stay in place.

As if 750,000 job losses weren't scary enough, a DNC email urging supporters to pressure Republicans to cut a deal with President Obama said that "more than two million jobs could be lost."

Even the White House isn't biting on that number. Earlier this month, the White House said that the job losses could hit 750,000, at least 1.25 million fewer than the DNC said.

Most analysis of the impact of the sequester on jobs back the White House. For example, the authoritative and highly-quoted Macroeconomic Advisers LLC of St. Louis put the job cuts, including those in the military, at 700,000. The Bipartisan Policy Center put the potential hit at 1 million jobs.

Only a George Mason University study has suggested cuts of 2.1 million.
