WASHINGTON (AP) — The National Park Service says an additional sewage overflow from this week's storms has caused untreated wastewater to spill into the C&O Canal in Georgetown.
The park service is advising anyone who uses the canal below Lock 6 to sanitize equipment that comes into contact with the water through midday Sunday. People are also advised not to fish in the canal below Lock 6 or go into the water during that time.
The overflow was confirmed Friday evening.
An earlier sewage spill led to the closure of the Capital Crescent Trail between Fletcher's Cove and Water Street in Georgetown. The trail is expected to remain closed for as long as several weeks.
