Months after a Shih Tzu named Coco was stabbed multiple times in Southeast D.C., the dog is doing well with a new family.

Coco was stabbed with a kitchen knife on Sept. 21 on the 4300 block of Hillside Road in a case of domestic violence. She experienced significant blood loss and had severe pain, according to the Washington Humane Society.

A veterinarian fostered the dog through her long but complete recovery, and the foster family then decided to adopt the dog. Coco's adopter wrote on the Humane Society's website that Coco "is a wonderful little girl, and she stole our hearts from day one."

The man who allegedly stabbed Coco was known to suffer from mental health problems. The U.S. Attorney's Office decided not to prosecute the case, according to a Humane Society official.
