A Silver Spring man was sentenced Tuesday to 40 years in prison for stabbing his estranged wife to death.

Hector Granados, 45, pleaded guilty in November to first-degree murder in the May 2012 death of 47-year-old Ana Ayala.

"This was a most tragic result from a domestic violence situation," said Montgomery County State's Attorney John McCarthy.

According to prosecutors, Granados confronted Ayala outside her apartment as she hopped into a friend's truck to go to a grocery store.

Granados then forced her out of the vehicle and stabbed her multiple times. She got into the truck and asked her friend to call 911. Emergency crews took her to a hospital, where she died.
