Anne Arundel County police are investigating the discovery of a apparent skull and body in a wooded area.

About 2:45 p.m. Monday, officers went to the area behind the 8100 block of Ritchie Highway in Pasadena.

A citizen told police that he was walking into the treeline when he found what seemed to be a human skull. Police and volunteers using cadaver dogs searched the wooded area and found what are believed to be the remaining body parts "a good distance away" from the head several hours later, police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said.

The person was taken to the medical examiner's office so that he or she can be identified and so that the cause of death can be determined.
