A small plane crashed in Spotsylvania County, about 75 miles southwest of Washington, killing a father and his son, police say.

Virginia State Police say that 48-year-old John B. Morton Jr. and his 13-year-old son Kyle J. Morton, of Stafford, died when their Cessna 150M hit a tree shortly after taking off from Shannon Airport Saturday evening. The plane fell into a mobile home park, but no one on the ground was injured and no homes were damaged.

The father was conducting takeoffs and landings at the airport, which serves only small planes, according to police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. Federal authorities are investigating the incident.

The Associated Press contributed reporting.
