WASHINGTON (AP) — A rare snowy owl that recently made its home in the nation's capital, including a perch at The Washington Post, has apparently been hit by a bus and is being treated at the National Zoo.

Zoo spokeswoman Annalisa Meyer says the owl was brought to the zoo shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday. A veterinarian was called in to treat the owl for an apparent head injury. It will then be transferred to a city rehabilitation facility.

Snowy owls aren't usually seen in the region, but have been moving far south of their Arctic habitats searching for food due to a population spike.

The zoo says the owl was reportedly hit by a bus near 15th and I streets downtown and found by District of Columbia police who alerted the zoo.
