The National Capital Planning Commission gave the go-ahead to a plan to redevelop 15 blocks of southwest D.C., the Associated Press reported Friday.

The plan, which was made available for public comment in July (see plan in embedded viewer below this story), calls for transforming the area between Maryland Avenue and 10th Street into "a highly sustainable, mixed use community," according to the project's summary.

The plan is expected to take place over the next quarter century, during which time it could potentially attract museums and memorials in the area.

The project is meant to connect the Southwest Waterfront and the National Mall.
