The S&P 500 index closed just above the symbolically significant number of 2,000 for the first time Tuesday, as stocks soared following positive economic reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also neared record highs.

Consumer confidence hit a post-recession high Tuesday, according the Conference Board. The Census Bureau reported record sales of long-lasting goods Tuesday morning, led by aircraft sales.

The S&P 500 first hit 2,000 Monday, but drifted back down to 1,997 before the day was over.
