Sports federations criticize IOC move on wrestling

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The association of summer Olympic sports has come out against the IOC move to cut wrestling from the program for the 2020 Games.

The ruling council of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations says the process that led to wrestling's exclusion by the IOC executive board last month is not "in the best interests of the IOC or the Olympic movement."

ASOIF says it will send a "constructive letter" to the IOC stating its position and offering to help with a "different process in future."

Wrestling's governing body FILA is a member of ASOIF. Wrestling is now competing with seven other sports seeking one opening on the 2020 program.

The Association of National Olympic Committees has also come out in support of wrestling's bid to stay on the program.
