Cutting loose veterans will save about $5m in cap space Oshiomogho Atogwe and Mike Sellers found themselves in a place they weren’t hoping to be: the open market. The Redskins released Sellers, a longtime veteran, and Atogwe on the day before free agency.
Sellers spent 11 of his 12 seasons in Washington but was relegated to a backup role at fullback and tight end and a special teams performer this past season. Sellers, whose release saves $1 million, expressed dissatisfaction with his role late in the season and said he could not return under similar circumstances.
Atogwe spent one season in Washington. His play was hindered by various leg injuries. His release saves the Redskins approximately $4 million on the cap this season.

London Fletcher » The inside linebacker wants to return, and the Redskins want him back. But as of Monday night they still appeared far enough apart that Fletcher could test the open market. One NFL source said Fletcher’s market value is around $6 million a year, and another didn’t think there would be a huge market for a soon-to-be 37-year old.
Adam Carriker » He long has said he would test free agency if he didn’t get a fair deal. Even if Jarvis Jenkins is healthy and productive in 2012, the Redskins want Carriker to be part of a three-man rotation at end.
LaRon Landry » He’s as good as gone. There’s a sense he might need a change of scenery. Landry has missed 15 games in the past two years combined and is still rehabbing his Achilles injury. He might need to take a one-year deal and prove he can stay healthy.
Tim Hightower » The running back is coming off a torn ACL and was not considered much more than a No. 2 by many teams around the league. It’s difficult to see another team signing him unless the Redskins don’t want him back. Coach Mike Shanahan often has praised Hightower.
