Saturday on ESPN3 live at 10a.m. the entire race. Sunday on ABC at 12:30p.m a highlight show.
Recently the American LeMans Series President and CEO Scott Atherton was here in Washington talking about the kickoff to the new season on March 19th with the 12 Hours of Sebring, his series dedication to green racing and most of all his new TV deal
A deal that will have his series first ever participation in the Baltimore Grand Prix airing live on ESPN3 on September 3rd and on ABC Sunday the 4th at 3p.m. I had a chance to talk about this racing unique series.
Atherton on the TV deal:”We are having the best of both worlds in our new deal with ESPN/ABC. All of our races will run live on ESPN3 which will include practices as well as qualifying. Then on either ABC or ESPN2 will air a condensed version of our races normally the following day so that fans will be able to see the races in a couple of exciting formats.”
Atherton on the type of cars that runs in the American LeMans Series:” Acura, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Ferrari, Ford, Panoz, Peugeot, Porsche and Saleen are all featured in the four different divisions that we have in our races. We offer race fans the exotic prototype as well as cars many of our fans drive every day like the Corvettes, the BMW’s, the Audi’s and the Porsche’s . Of course the ones in our races are a little more special. I really think the fans that follow our series this season will make the trip up from Washington and especially from Embassy Row to see our international battle of the U.S. facing some of most famous brands in the world racing on the streets of Baltimore.”
Atherton on the green technology on display with the series:” In 2006 Audi launched its revolutionary R10 TDI diesel race car, winning at the 12 Hours of Sebring, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Petit Le Mans in its inaugural year. We have a Porsche hybrid that runs at speeds of over 200 miles per hour. This is the fourth year that we have used an ethanol blend (E10) for all non-diesel cars to use in competition. The diesel cars compete as well, being powered by a special ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel from Shell, while featuring liquid components made from natural gas. We use G-Oil, the official motor oil of the Series and it is the world’s first and only bio-based and ultimate biodegradable motor oil approved by the American Petroleum Institute. Simply put we are the greenest racing series on the planet and we are constantly looking for better and eco friendly ways to race.”
