POP-UP DOUGHNUT

A cup of freshly brewed coffee and a handmade doughnut is the perfect pairing -- at least that's what Chinatown Coffee Co. (475 H St. NW) and pastry chef Jason Gehring think. For those of you who stop by Chinatown Coffee Co. on your morning commute to work, we've got great news for you. Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken has set up shop in the specialty coffee bar Thursday and Friday, and you'll get to choose from a variety of its gourmet doughnuts.

Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken will be putting down roots this January in Metro Center. Owners and longtime friends Elliot Spaisman and Jeff Halpern are hosting this pop-up preview to get people excited about their new concept of combining two all-American comfort foods under one roof. Doughnuts will be available starting at 8 a.m. until they sell out.

TALK FOR TWO

If you loved Steven Spielberg's new drama about the 16th president's role in the Civil War, then this next event will add to your history repertoire. Ford's Theatre Society presents an all-new exhibition titled Torn in Two about the American Civil War. The exhibition explores the causes that led to the war, the strategies used by the Union and the Confederacy and how the war is remembered.

Dr. Debra Newman Ham, professor of history at Morgan State University, will give a gallery talk at 12:30 p.m. about the Emancipation Proclamation and the effect it had on the United States after the war.

The discussion will be held on the Second Floor Gallery at the Center for Education and Leadership (514 Tenth St. NW). The exhibition will run through Feb. 24.
