Today at Spotlight, we're celebrating Matchbox's 10-year anniversary. It's hard to believe that Chinatown's favorite pizza joint has been open for that long. You may not know that it all started as a simple idea back in 2003 among a group of longtime friends who wanted to introduce Washingtonians to great pizza. The restaurant became an instant hit, and the group decided to try its luck by opening several more stores -- first in Palm Springs, Calif., then on Capital Hill, the 14th Street Corridor and finally in Rockville. The founders have become a thriving Washington culinary group with multiple concepts, including Ted's Bulletin, a family diner, and DC-3, a regional hot dog joint.
Celebrate with them this month with 10th-anniversary specials. Meet alumni bartenders every Monday, and enjoy $10 pizzas every Tuesday and $10 for 10 mini burgers on Wednesdays. Go to matchboxchinatown.com for more details.
WOMEN & THEIR PETS
This next event is for ladies only and is brought to us by the Washington Humane Society. (They really know how to throw a party!) Sign up for Ladies Night Out at Sushiko (5455 Wisconsin Ave. NW -- one of our favorite restaurants in town), where you can indulge in sushi hors d'oeuvres, pink cocktails, treats and mini manis courtesy of Nival Salon & Spa in Chevy Chase. You can even network while browsing on-sale jewelry from local boutiques with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting Fashion for Paws. And did we mention that everyone will receive a swag bag?
The pampered evening starts at 5 p.m. and only costs $10. Get your ticket at ladiesnightoutf4p.eventbrite.com. For more information about WHS and how you can become more involved, visit washhumane.org.
