SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State Police have joined a texting alert system. And authorities are encouraging the public to sign up.

State police say they are now using the Nixle Mass Communication System, which enables them to send texts to the public about things like road closures, evacuations and severe weather conditions.

New Mexico residents can go to nixle.com to sign up for alerts in their area by providing their cell phone number and the zip codes for where they live and work.
