VOICE-OVER SCRIPT:

EXPOSED MECHANISMS, TOP HATS AND VICTORIAN LOOKING CLOTHES ARE ALL PART OF A NEW STYLE IN FASHION AND FURNISHINGS CALLED

"STEAMPUNK."

SOME SAY IT PROMISES TO BE ONE OF FASHION'S HOTTEST NEW TRENDS IN THE COMING YEARS...BUT IT'S ALREADY CATCHING ON IN SOUTH AFRICA.

SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Jones, Steampunk Artist:

"..there was a period in the industrial revolution where machines were big and exciting and new."

THE FUTURISTIC STYLE TAKES ITS INSPIRATION FROM THE VICTORIAN ERA AND WHAT PEOPLE FROM THAT TIME THOUGHT THE FUTURE WOULD LOOK LIKE.

JONES BELIEVES THE POPULARITY OF STEAM-PUNK STEMS FROM THE FASCINATION WITH TODAY'S NEW TECHNOLOGY.

SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Jones, Steampunk Artist:

"When we all look at technology of today, it's very amazing, but its secrets are hidden from me. I don't quite understand how it works."

STEAMPUNK FURNISHINGS DRAW UPON THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION WHERE IF YOU LOOKED AT A MACHINE YOU COULD SEE COGS TURNING, GEARS SHIFTING, AND CHAINS PULLING.

TRUTH COFFEE SHOP IS ONE PLACE FOLLOWING THIS TREND.

CO-OWNER DAVID DONDE SAYS HE ENJOYS SEEING THE REACTION OF VISITORS TO THE STEAM-PUNK STYLE.

SOUNDBITE (English) David Donde, Co-owner of Truth Coffee Shop:

"They don't get the genre, and that's even more fun, and seeing them go in, and then sort of indulging, and then a question to a waiter. And then you see the cell phone or the computer comes out, and there's this google and epiphany."

DONDE SAYS IT MAY BE ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL THE WINDING COGS OF STEAM-PUNK FIND THEIR WAY TO OTHER CORNERS OF THE GLOBE.
