A 20-year-old student at the University of Virginia's College at Wise who falsely claimed that he saw a gunman on campus has been arrested.

Bryant Hairston, of Martinsville, was charged with falsely calling law enforcement, a school spokeswoman said, referencing police reports. He is a sophomore psychology major but cannot return to campus while his court case is pending.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday, the student called 911 to report that he had seen a gunman near one of the Southwestern Virginia school's residence halls. Law enforcement then went to the school and conducted a building-by-building search. The campus was on lockdown for more than an hour.

While officers were searching the campus, Virginia State Police interviewed Hairston. During the interview, the student confessed that his report was a hoax, police said.
