CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — A two-year study concludes the Charlottesville area has more than 180 active gang members.
That finding is from an Albemarle County and Charlottesville task force on gang activity. Media reports say the panel found the most prevalent gang locally is the Bloods, with nearly 80 members in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area.
The estimates were released Thursday by the Gang Reduction through Active Community Engagement Committee. It worked on the report over the last two years.
Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said the committee will use the data to put together strategies to combat gang activity.
