A hot cup o' stupid

An Alabama man who walked into a Starbucks to supposedly rob the business ended up with nothing but a cup of coffee -- and a stay in jail.

According to The Huntsville Times, Phillip Sawdey demanded all the cash from the store. The barista said she was unable to open the cash drawer but offered Sawdey a coffee instead.

Sawdey took the hot beverage and left the store. Police found him nearby and arrested him on a robbery charge.

His student loan officer was fine with plan

A bank robber who wore the headgear of the University of Wisconsin mascot Bucky Badger told police that he needed the money because he has $250,000 in student debt and that he wants to go to prison.

Randall Hubatch, 49, told detectives that he would confess if prosecutors promised to send him away for a long time.

"Otherwise, I have nothing else to say, and if released I will do it again," Hubatch is quoted as telling police, reports the Wisconsin State Journal.

The so-called Badger Bandit earned a bachelor's in English in 1998 and a law degree in 2004.

Faux news

Cleveland police have arrested members of a fake TV news crew that stun-gunned their interview subjects.

The group of young men would approach people outside various convenience stores and ask for an interview, reports The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

The fake news crew then would zap their victims and flee.

Officers confiscated a video camera, two bags of marijuana and a high-voltage stun gun.

The men told police they were shocking victims "just for fun" and recording it.
