The Del Ray Music Festival, Saturday
What started out as a music recital for students and teachers at a local music school at the Masonic Temple in 2007 has expanded into something different altogether.
The Del Ray Music Festival now features dozens of acts, games for the kids, food and refreshments at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center Fields.
"I've lived in Del Ray pretty much my whole life," said Kate Moran, frontwoman of the band that bears her name and a co-founder of the festival. "I really like the community."
Over the last five years, the festival has grown to incorporate bands from other neighborhoods and features a variety of acts.
Headlining this year is Virginia native Pat McGee, a major regional star.
"He's definitely the next level up," Moran said. "Every year we're getting larger and larger."
Just how big the festival gets in following years depends, naturally, on finances. The event is supported through sponsors and remains free to attend.
For the second consecutive year, Del Ray has hosted a week's worth of music leading up to the festival. Del Ray Music Week highlights musicians from the region performing at local venues such as the Evening Star Cafe, St. Elmo's Coffee Pub and Fireflies.
The multiple venues and the response from musicians show how solid the music scene in Del Ray is.
"I think it's definitely strong," Moran said. "There's good music around the Del Ray area. It's a great community to be in."
