Concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief at the Hamilton Sunday
When Tom Meyer, president of the Clyde's Restaurant Group, saw how Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the Eastern seaboard, he sprung to action.
This Sunday, the Hamilton in D.C. plays host to a concert for Hurricane Sandy Relief, with all proceeds going to the American Red Cross.
The fundraising event concert is highlighted by BandHouse Gig's tribute to the Band's Last Waltz. In 1976, the Band played a Thanksgiving Evening farewell show, documented in the Martin Scorsese film "The Last Waltz." BandHouse Gigs features local musicians that will replicate that night.
The "Last Waltz" tribute at the Hamilton was already scheduled. With the Thanksgiving mindset of that evening, Meyer felt it natural to turn it into a charity event.
"Right after the hurricane hit and the images started coming in, I started thinking we should do something," Meyer said by phone. "It was all right there for us."
The rest of the evening came together quickly. There will be a turkey parfait dinner, a raffle and silent auction.
"That's what we do," Meyer said. "We're able to put it together."
Meyer said that no one has said "no" as he's reached out for donations and support, and added that he has a goal of at least $50,000 raised.
"Everybody has been very generous," Meyer said.
