Saturday: Tribute to Chrissie Hynde & the Pretenders at Wolf Trap

Tribute concerts abound. There are performances dedicated to Zeppelin, Springsteen and the Grateful Dead, and approximately a kajillion Beatles shows.

But the Pretenders? Not so much.

On Saturday, area concert promoter BandHouse Gigs is putting on a tribute to Chrissie Hynde & the Pretenders at Wolf Trap

"I was surprised when they picked this band for a tribute," said local musician Patty Reese, who is headlining the Wolf Trap show. She quickly realized why. "These guys have been seriously influential and have hits for two decades. That's incredible. It's all high-quality, well-done, true-to-form. They never sold out. Hopefully what we're doing will help them get more of the credit that they're due."

Rock and Roll Hall of fame inductees the Pretenders, fronted by Hynde, formed in the late 1970s. The band produced a number of hits, including "Back on the Chain Gang," "I'll Stand By You" and "Middle of the Road."

In addition to Reese, the Saturday tribute show features a number of local musicians, including Margot MacDonald and Todd Wright.

"It's a great opportunity to work with a lot of artists I've heard of and admired from afar but have never had an opportunity to work with because we're all so busy doing our own things," Reese.

Reese added that the musicians only get one rehearsal in advance of Saturday's show. She does have an advantage -- she played in a Pretenders cover band in the '80s.

"I love rock 'n' roll," Reese said. "The Pretenders were a welcome addition in the early '80s. They were just a fresh breath of air. They were different."
