Why might Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, be facing a court martial?

Thousands of flirtatious emails between Allen and Florida socialite Jill Kelley were discovered during the investigation that revealed the affair between Paula Broadwell and Gen. David Petraeus -- the now former director of the CIA. Unlike Petraeus, who retired from the military before he began his affair, Allen is still on active duty, and adultery is a crime under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Up to now, the brilliant stone had been owned by royalty or held in private collections. The flawless, 76.02-carat jewel was sold Tuesday in Geneva for $21,474,525 -- a record per-carat price for a colorless diamond. The new owner has decided to remain anonymous but plans to donate the stone for display in a museum.

How big is the U.S. deficit this year?

The U.S. was already $120 billion in the red at the end of last month. The Treasury Department said the deficit in October, the first month in the 2013 fiscal year, was 22 percent higher than the same month last year. That puts the country on track for its fifth straight $1 trillion-plus annual deficit.
