Tax credit could benefit disabled public safety workers

A proposed property tax credit would benefit Baltimore County police officers, firefighters and correctional officers permanently injured on the job.

Baltimore County Councilman Vince Gardina has introduced legislation establishing a full county property tax credit for disabled public safety personnel and their surviving spouses. Gardina, a Perry Hall Democrat and former police officer, said Baltimore County remains one of the few jurisdictions left to implement a credit after state lawmakers passed enabling legislation during the General Assembly session that ended in April.

“I thought it was time to do so,” Gardina said.

The credit, Gardina said, is similar to one already available to blind residents and veterans.

The proposal will be discussed at the council work session Oct. 28. A vote is scheduled for Nov. 3.
