Michael Cohen will serve out the rest of his sentence under house arrest after being released from prison because of an outbreak of the coronavirus.
Attorney Roger Adler told CNN on Thursday that Cohen was one of several inmates being released from a federal prison in New York as the state works to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The Otisville prison has already had 14 inmates and seven members of the staff test positive for COVID-19.
Cohen was expected to remain in the prison until November 2021 to serve out his three-year sentence after pleading guilty to bank fraud, lying to Congress, and illegal campaign contributions in December 2018. In March, he asked the court to reduce his prison sentence but was denied. The judge noted that Cohen had committed “serious crimes that had far-reaching institutional harms” when denying the request.
Cohen was President Trump’s personal attorney prior to his legal troubles. He will not be fully released from the prison for 14 days until he completes his quarantine to ensure that the virus does not spread to the general public from the prison.
