OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Online brokerage TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. says it handled 3 percent more trades per day as the market soared in January.

The Omaha, Neb., based company said Monday it handled an average of 387,000 trades per day in January. That's 3 percent higher than the previous January and 17 percent higher than December 2012.

Ameritrade says the total client assets it held at the end of January increased 17 percent over the previous year to $499.3 billion.

Ameritrade generates revenue from the trading fees it charges and asset-based fees and interest it collects on the assets its holds.

The company's monthly activity statistics also give the market an idea of investors' mood.
