JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A measure that would impose stricter evaluations for teachers advanced from a Missouri House committee that defeated the measure last week.

The House Fiscal Review Committee cleared the bill for debate Monday after Republican House Speaker Tim Jones removed two Republicans who joined with Democrats to block the measure last week. Jones named two other Republicans to the panel who voted in favor of advancing the measure Monday.

Democratic Rep. Brandon Ellington, of Kansas City, made the request to consider the bill again, despite voting against the legislation. He says he plans to offer amendments on the House floor that will loosen some the bill's requirements and keep intact certain teacher tenure protections.
