Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, announced on Monday that he has hired Paul Teller as his deputy chief of staff after Teller was fired in December for working with conservative groups to undermine the House budget agreement.

Teller was the executive director of the Republican Study Committee, a group of House conservatives.

Grassroots conservatives were quick to signal approval on the hire, recognizing it as a shot against the establishment Republicans who fired him. Teller is hugely popular with Washington-based groups who relied on him for important information about what was really going on behind the scenes in Congress.

"This is a great hire," noted RedState's Erick Erickson to the Washington Examiner in reaction to the news. "It shows Cruz is leading the conservative movement and can hopefully bridge a gap between House and Senate conservatives that the RSC clearly doesn't want to do anymore."
